Yossi Verter examines the ongoing internal conflicts within Israel's Labor party. "The Labor Party last night provided its members and the entire public a pitiful, crazed show of force that even Uzi Cohen, the Likud deputy mayor of Ra'anana who is mocked so effectively in the satire show "Eretz Nehederet," would have been uncomfortable had he attended. For the sake of a holy cause - blocking Barak - the convention's organizers were prepared to even risk lives."
(Ha’aretz) Analysis: Yossi Verter examines the ongoing internal conflicts within Israel’s Labor party. “The Labor Party last night provided its members and the entire public a pitiful, crazed show of force that even Uzi Cohen, the Likud deputy mayor of Ra'anana who is mocked so effectively in the satire show "Eretz Nehederet," would have been uncomfortable had he attended. For the sake of a holy cause - blocking Barak - the convention's organizers were prepared to even risk lives.”
(Jerusalem Post) Feature: Judy Siegel Itzkovich reports on the status of HIV and AIDS in Israel. “Israel has seven hospital centers for which HIV is tested and where the disease is treated. The basket of health services includes the basic drug "cocktail" and is provided by the health funds to all who need it; more expensive drugs needed by certain patients who have developed resistance to the conventional drugs are not. A special program of support and education is in place to help immigrants from countries where HIV is endemic.”
(Jerusalem Post) Feature: Larry Derfner explores the volatile issue of gay marriage in Israel. “A breakthrough came on November 14 when the Nazareth District Court ruled that a gay man who'd lived for 40 years with his partner, now deceased, was entitled to the same inheritance rights as any heterosexual common law spouse.”
(JTA) Analysis: Rachel Pomerance reports on the status of the Falash Mura and how federations are attempting to help. “The United Jewish Communities, the federation system’s coordinating body, recently formed a committee to determine how to assist the Falash Mura. The group held its first meeting at the UJC General Assembly in mid-November to discuss building broader backing for the Falash Mura among local federations.”
(Israel Foreign Affairs Ministry) Backgrounder: Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, cites Martin Luther King in an impassioned speech about the Mideast. “The whole Middle East stands at a point in history suffused with frenetic changes. We must harness the promise of improvement arrayed before us, and along with the international community, stand firmly against those who would resist it. All States and peoples in the Middle East deserve better, and Israel is committed to achieving it in partnership with its neighbors in the region.”
(Israel21C) Feature: David Brinn highlights new findings by Israeli scientists on the cause and cure for bad breath. “Mild halitosis usually results from anaerobic bacteria breeding in shallow cavities in the gums or teeth. They release foul-smelling gases such as hydrogen sulfide. Routine dental treatment, regular brushing and mouthwashes usually solve this problem. But there are more persistent cases and Professor Yehuda Finkelstein of the Meir Hospital at the Sapir Medical Center in Kfar Saba, has found that the tonsils are often to blame.”
